COMMUNITY SERVICE, RUGBY RELIEF, OFF FIELD WORK!
Over the last two weekend, our club, once again teamed up with Rugby Relief and Attack Poverty to provide assistance to those who are still dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Days after Harvey hit, HARC teamed up with Rugby Relief to send teams out in the community to help those in need, from cleaning out homes to helping complete the stripping of sheetrock, cabinetry, carpeting and more. A few of our players were also among those impacted by the historical flooding brought on by the hurricane.
It is clear that the work is not done when the houses are stripped, as now impacted individuals and families are still in the long phase of rebuilding their homes. As a club we feel it is our duty and privilege to give back to our community and to help when and where we can!
The past two weekends have seen players, spouses of players, the president of the club and his wife, all out helping Rugby Relief rebuild the home of a lady whose house took on 2 feet of water during the flooding. The entire downstairs needed to be stripped, new insulation put in, new sheet rock up, and the walls taped and floated.
On March 10, the men’s team faced off against the HUN’s and the next morning, the team showed up to put in a different type of work. Despite having played the day before the team helped to finish clearing out the house and began the process of putting the insulation back up. This past weekend the women’s team played a hard fought game against the Valkyries on Saturday, but where up and ready to work on Sunday. This time instead of playing on the field they helped install the sheetrock, and tape and float the walls on this house.
We were not able to finish everything that needs to be fixed in the house, but we were able to give a big helping hand and get the walls up and tapped. These steps might not seem that big in the grand scheme of the damage left behind by Harvey, but for this homeowner these are small steps to rebuilding what was lost. It is an honor to give and serve when needed and our community has proven what real teamwork is.
