HARC Men 7s and HARC OId Boy 10s Celebrate Success in The Woodlands
July 31, 2022 – The sweltering heat of a late July day turned into a celebratory night at Gosling Sports Fields in The Woodlands. The Woodlands Rugby Football Club hosted their annual Cherrybone 7s tournament, with HARC supplying two teams, a social division men’s 7s team, led by Glen Fontenot and Dominic van der Walt, and the HARC Old Boys 10s team led by Robert Rutherford.
The six clubs in the social division were split into two three team pools before going into the playoff bracket. HARC drew a pool with the Sam Houston State alumni team, the SPERMS, and the Kingwood, Texas based Fammigos. HARC needed a zero-time try to beat the SPERMS 24-19 in the first match, led by two tries from Eric Hughes. In the second match, HARC played great defense and beat the Fammigos 33-7 to take first place in the pool. In a chippy match that saw consecutive in-goal knocks from each team, Galveston Rugby Football Club played a much closer match than the 26-7 score shows. The social final was set with HARC facing a familiar foe in the Houston United Rugby Team. In a very tight game, dominated by solid defense from both sides, HARC pulled out the victory 19-14 and won the social division at Cherrybone 7s after a tough second place in the 2021 Cherrybone social final.
The HARC Old Boys were trying to repeat as back-to-back Cherrybone Masters 10s champions after a dominating performance in last year’s tournament. In the first match, against the HOBOs, Stefan Marr put on a great show as the HARC Old Boys won, 26-7. The second match saw the hosting Deadwood of The Woodlands play a tough match to the HARC Old Boys, with both teams scoring 4 tries. Conversions were the difference as Deadwood came out on top 24-20. The HARC Old Boys met Deadwood again in the Masters 10s final, which was a 10 vs 10 boatrace. Sadly in a photo-finish, HARC lost the lead late, ceding the Cherrybone Masters 10s championship to Deadwood.
The evening ended with celebrations from both sides. Of special note is winning hardware in a farewell to HARC’s 2021-22 captain, Dominic van der Walt, who is moving to Oregon shortly. All of the HARC family is proud of his accomplishments with the club and wish him the best of luck in
