HARC D2 MEN WIN FOURTH WIN IN A ROW ON CAREER DAY FOR RORY GLEESONThis past Sunday, the HARC D2 Men hosted The Woodlands RFC for the second match of the season between the two storied clubs. The match would also be the decider of the Bayou Battle Rugby Cup, which is awarded to the winner of the season series between the 2 Clubs. The Woodlands took the first match of the series with an 9 point advantage, 48-39, so HARC needed to win by 10 or more to retain the Cup. With HARC riding a 3 match winning streak and WRFC coming off 49 point victory over West Houston, this HARC vs WRFC match, on a muggy Sunday afternoon, was shaping up to be a battle. Referee Blair McClure’s whistle blew at 2pm, and in the first 3 minutes, HARC, was down 0-7 on a try by The Woodlands outside center Dominique Dobbins. HARC came right back with 15 points, all by scrum half Rory Gleeson with two sneaky tries, a conversion, and a penalty kick, making the score 15-7 HARC when the first half ended on a fantastic tackle by flanker Ernesto Turc. The second half scoring started with a great run by center Julian Nunn, converted by Rory Gleeson, and another penalty kick by Rory. With HARC up 25-7, The Woodlands did not back down. Foregoing a forward heavy offensive attack, which wasn’t working, The Woodlands started getting the ball out quickly, with Dobbins and wing LaThaddeus Hill Jr taking big gains almost every time the ball got out to them. Excellent defense by starting wingbacks Stefan Marr, Dee Paul, and Mitch Pedler, as well as by minute 53 sub John LeDuff, kept The Woodlands from getting closer than two scores from HARC. That defense was needed as yellow cards were shown to Nunn and shortly after to Tom Sargeant leaving HARC with only 13 players. Another try and conversion by Rory Gleeson, and two tries from The Woodlands wingbacks made the final score HARC 32 - The Woodlands 19. With the 13 point victory, HARC retained The Bayou Battle Rugby Cup, marking the 3rd consecutive time HARC has won it. HARC hosted the social at Bubba’s Bar & Grill on Washington. The Woodlands named #8 Tom Sargeant as Man of the Match for HARC, and HARC named #14, LaThaddeus Hill Jr., as The Woodlands MotM. HARC D2 improves to 4-3-0 on the season, and moved to first place in the TRU D2 South with three cup matches left. The Men play the West Houston Lions (3-2) at home on Saturday, March 23 in both D2 and D4 matches. HARC D2 Men v The Woodlands RFC - 2019-Mar-10Photo credits to Sallie Buckner. |
